Q&A

What projects are you working on right now, and why are you enthusiastic about them?

I’m currently working on a new series of work based on women's struggles in everyday life, for exemple, body image, breastfeeding, menopause. It’s a series of 12 large panels on unstretched canvas. Each of them starts with a collage of recycled materials. The figures are painted in acrylics. They are inspired by issues I’m facing or stories women around me are telling me about. I also do a lot of research on the history of women in modern society. I’m learning so much, it’s very rewarding.

What is your favorite part of the artistic process?

It's when I meet people and they tell me their stories, their lives, hopes and hardships.  I’m an art historian by training. I used to spend days at the library for my research.  I do the same now for my paintings. For each of my artwork  I start by looking up specific subjects like swimming pools on the East coast, the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, the gold rush, the state of women’s health etc…  And when I talk to people about these subjects, they add to it, with their own experience and knowledge, they show me family pictures or notebooks. It makes it even more personal. They are a great inspiration for my work.

Tell me about the classes that you teach and the interaction with your Students.

I have always been interested in the art world. I studied and taught Art and Art history at the University and private schools in France. When I moved to the Bay Area twenty years ago, I started teaching French in private schools. I then decided to combine French, art and art history. I started to teach art classes in French to adults, teens and kids. After teaching at different locations, I opened my own business “Artefleur’s studio”. My students bring so much of themselves, their energy to learn, their questioning,  their creativity. I’m really enjoying it. My classes are very flexible, I always ask my students what they would like to learn and then I add to it with art history, examples of artists and techniques, experimentations and virtual museums visits.  I just moved to Rye, NY and I’m reopening my studio after the pandemic. It’s a new adventure.
