Landing in Amsterdam

July 19, 2019

We landed in Amsterdam and the roller coaster started immediately with one goal in mind : settle in as fast as possible: find a new place to move in, find the most efficient way to go to school or to work in the morning, find the grocery store and a vet for Mushu. We landed on May 1st, it’s now mid-July and we made it! After staying 8 weeks in an appart/hotel, we’re comfortably installed in a 18th century House on a beautiful canal. We found the supermarkets, bought second hands bikes and I even have a beautiful studio to work on my paintings.

It was a lot of work opening all the moving boxes but it was worth it, the space is amazing. I already noticed that the color of the light here is very different from the California light, I’m starting to see Rembrandt’s and Vermeer’s work with a new eye. As you can see my table and easels are already placed as close as possible to the large windows to catch the natural light.

“Woman Writing a letter, with her maid” by Vermeer

I just finished a painting for a show with Cactus gallery in L.A. Can you spot it on the poster?

MOTHER'S LITTLE HELPER
Online Group Show Only
Opens Saturday, July 20, 2019 *5p

What gets you through your busy day? In The Rolling Stones song, "Mother's Little Helper', Mick describes a little yellow pill that does the trick, but really, most everyone has something that "helps them on their way, gets them through their busy day". For this show, we asked artists to tell us how they deal with the vagaries and stressors of life and keep the doldrums at bay.

Contact sandra@cactusgalleryla.com for questions, more images, or info on interest free installment plans.

Participating artists: Douglas Alvarez, Ulla Anobile, Skye Becker-Yamakawa, Terri Berman, Andrea Bogdan, Catherine Bursill Moore, Lacey Bryant, Anna Chung, Nancy Cintron, Janae Corrado, Fran De Anda, Rosie Garcia, Lori Herbst, Veronica Jaeger, Lydia Moon Hee Kim, Mavis Leahy, Kahla Lewis, Milka Lolo, Snow Mack, Emma Mount, Nichol Norman, Janet Olenik, Tania Pomales, Myriam Powell, Fleur Spolidor, Jen Starling, Linnea Strid, Kelly Vetter, Joe Vollan, Michelle Waters, Simone Young and more.

It’s amazing to see the Dutch riding their bicycles, my little painting “Equilibrium” is probably the first of a long series on the subject. Do you have good memories of riding your bikes, share them with me, they might turn into a great painting.

I hope you’re enjoying your summer!

From Amsterdam with Love.
